A QUARTET of Macclesfield College students may have the opportunity to trial for the England Schoolboys football programme thanks to a regional competition run by British Colleges Sport (BCS).

Business student Matt Hodgson and sports students Ash Ault, Aaron Walker and Chris Bass currently feature in the college's football team. The Park Lane college's team plays in competitive games including the British Colleges Competition, the English Schools' FA Competition and the John Sleigh Cup.

BCS have also put together a regional squad consisting of 18 players drawn from colleges across the North West to take part in a competition involving colleges from other regions, and the four Macclesfield students have been called up into the North West squad.

If the regional team make it to the final of the competition there is an opportunity for players to be selected to represent England Under-18s, as scouts from the national governing body, including Schools' FA, will be present at the game.

Macclesfield College Lecturer in Sport and Public Services, Charles Osula, praised the students for their efforts so far: "Credit goes to the boys for their level of commitment as they all have full-time studies and there is little or no opportunity to get together for training" he said.

"This regional competition could present a real opportunity for them to progress into the Schoolboy International set up."
