A superbly composed unbroken stand of 51 between Simon Turner and Jon Hadley saw Poynton to victory.

Chasing the same total as in the calamitous match against Heaton Mersey two weeks earlier, Poynton ensured that the result this time would be different as this pair kept out some fine bowling from Aussie paceman Dan Schuppan.

Paul Gould and Antonio Mayers hit some fine strokes, but neither would move past the twenties, and Poynton's comfortable position of 54-1 soon became 72-7 as Schuppan's pace and seam movement wreaked havoc, sending back four of his victims for ducks.

Chris Brady bagged two wickets in this passage of play, but it was him that the lower order first got to grips with as Turner hoisted him for two cleanly hit sixes in one over.

Hampered by an ankle injury as well as tiredness, Schuppan was finally forced to admit defeat after a heroic spell as he slumped to the turf at the end of his 17th over, with figures of five for 51.

There were still nervy moments after he was withdrawn, such as Turner being caught off no balls twice in one over, but the pair held their nerve.

One curious statistic here is that while chasing 123, Poynton's best two partnerships totalled 100, yet the side still contrived to lose seven wickets.

Simon Hall (34) and Schuppan (21) were Cheadle's top scorers, with Turner taking two for 24 from 14 overs and deserving much more.

Damian Stringer took three for nine from eight overs in mopping up the tail.
