Sports club to stay

POYNTON Sports Club is to stay at its existing site, rather than moving to a new location.

The existing facilities, however, fail to meet the needs of the eight sports played at the London Road North venue, particularly the enormously successful junior sports which provide a valuable positive influence on local youngsters.

With more than 1,200 members, almost all Poynton residents have a connection with the club in their family in some way, especially through the junior set-up.

The club's committee has now identified over half an acre of its site for a designed housing development.

Club chairman Kevin Bell told the Express: "The funds raised from the sale of this land will be used to develop sports and social facilities for the benefit of the residents of Poynton, particularly its large junior sports community."

The club is now seeking a suitable and experienced partner to help develop the site, optimise the receipts, and progress and deliver a master plan for the development of facilities, which has been created following a consultation exercise with members.

Bell added: "These are really exciting times for Poynton Sports Club. We are one of the most successful sports clubs in the north of England.

"We have an enviable reputation for junior sports provision and are a valuable community resource. We believe the people of Poynton will be pleased to know we are staying at our established home and instead, by sensitively developing this surplus land, we will greatly improve the appearance of our site.

"Together with matching grant funds, this will allow us to make a really significant investment in yet more improvements to our sports and social facilities for the people of Poynton."
