Rain ruins Poynton's chances

CRICKET: Bredbury St Mark's 84, Poynton 12-1 (Match abandoned)

THE ENCOUNTER at Poynton was finally abandoned two hours after the last action of the day.

Poynton's efforts to get the ground fit for play before the start and during the interruption proved in vain.

With the captains unable to agree on the fitness of the ground and the umpires deciding not to order a resumption of play, an abandonment was inevitable.

Poynton had moved into a dominant position with another disciplined bowling and fielding effort.

Simon Turner led the way with five for 31 from 18 overs of unerring accuracy, with two wickets each for Antonio Mayers and Jamie Maltman and one for Damian Stringer.

Peter Zybrands' 28 was the only significant score for Bredbury, but he was unable to resist attempting big shots once spin was introduced, which proved to be his downfall.

After a short rain delay at tea, it was decided that Poynton's reply would start.

Their openers took to the field, followed several minutes later by the reluctant Bredbury fielders.

After 45 minutes and nine overs, the rain put paid to the day's play.
