Golden Eagle

Macclesfield Satellite Jonny Eagle won gold in the English Independent Schools' Championships, held in Millfield, Somerset.

The 11-year-old attends Newcastle High, Orme House, and is the club's swimming captain.

Eagle and his Under-11 team-mates from Orme House, travelled to Somerset last weekend to take part in both individual and relay races, having qualified from previous highly competitive rounds at local and regional level.

Eagle won his heat of the 50m individual backstroke and qualified for the final as fastest swimmer, with a personal best time of 34.76sec.

The youngster went on to win the final, further improving his personal best to 34.71.

This was both a fantastic time and an amazing achievement as the field represented some of the best young swimmers in England.

As a member of Macclesfield Satellites Swimming Club, he regularly competes in both local and nationwide competitions.

Eagle is now looking to follow in the footsteps of some famous former pupils of Newcastle High School, such as Olympic swimmer Heidi Erp and England's Junior Schoolboys captain and British record holder, David Gregory.

He has already broken one of Gregory's school records.
