Macclesfield medal haul

27/ 6/2007

MACCLESFIELD youngsters came away with five gold, four silver and two bronze medals at the 2007 Cheshire Youth Games, in one of the best hauls by the borough's team in years.

Top honours came Macclesfield's way in the boys and girls hockey, senior girls netball and rugby, and tennis.

Macc, who topped the medals table, also came away with silver in the basketball, boccia, football and juniors' mixed rugby.

The borough's juniors also gained third-place finishes in the athletics and junior girls' netball.

Around 200 youngsters from the borough competed at the Games, at Cheshire Oaks High School, Ellesmere Port, at the weekend. The aim is to give teenagers who are not already members of clubs a chance to experience competition.

Gill O'Hare, Sports Development Officer at Macclesfield Borough Council, said: "An excellent day was had by all. The support for the young people from family and friends was great to see and I would like to thank parents for their constant support.

"A big thank you must go to all the team managers who offer their time on a voluntary basis and Adam Young - Community Sports Coach and Keith Rogers - Activity Development Officer - for their assistance on the day. Once again I would like to thank AstraZeneca for their ongoing support for grassroots sport."

All trophies will be on display in Macclesfield Leisure Centre from July 9.

Any youngsters who would like to continue playing competitive sport should contact MBC Sports Development for details of local clubs on 01625 504525.
