Poynton ease to win

AN EMPHATIC return to form for spinner Jamie Maltman inspired Poynton to a victory that keeps them in the promotion race.

Birkenhead Park reached 33 without loss in seven overs, but had little more to cheer.

After this point, Poynton's bowlers and fielders seemed to regard every run conceded as a personal affront.

The last 48 overs of the innings produced only 82 runs in stark contrast to the whirlwind start.

It was during the 38 overs bowled in tandem by the left arm duo of Maltman and Damian Stringer that the stranglehold was applied the tightest.

For Maltman this was the same combination of bounce, accuracy and prodigious turn that saw him become fourth top wicket taker in the Premier Division two years ago.

With two excellent stumpings from Simon Dunn, one to remove top scorer Tom Hunter for 38, his final return of six for 25 was his best ever for Poynton.

Stringer deserved better than the one for 45 analysis he finished with, as his spell was also vital in establishing Poynton's dominance.

Only one extra was conceded in the entire innings, a solitary leg bye as late as the 51st over, with the relentless pressure being further maintained by a staggering over rate of 23 per hour.

In reply, Stringer and Paul Gould were quickly into their stride.

Two John Costain wickets reduced Poynton from 48-0 to 56-2, only for Dunn to instantly smash Costain for three fours in successive balls, thus removing the greatest threat from the visiting attack.

Dunn kept the entertainment levels high for a while longer, before falling for 31 from 30 balls.

Stringer also departed for 45, but Poynton already knew they were on their way to a comfortable win.

In contrast, Poynton's fielding let them down as they went out of the league Twenty20 Cup at Bramhall.

Good bowling from Simon Turner, Rick Clark and Maltman reduced Bramhall to 82-5 before a recovery from Jack Marshall (31 not out) and Nick Atherton (33) helped them to 149-7.

Poynton stuttered to 15-4 in reply with Nick Bell and Simon Wilkinson bagging two wickets apiece, before recovering to 99 all out.

Go on Jamie Maltman! It's good to see that you haven't lost your grip on that spinning finger of yours. I will have to keep on eye out on this website from now on. Good luck with the rest of the season. Matt
