Close defeats for Macc pair

30/ 5/2007

MACCLESFIELD Boys' Boxing Club had two talented team members performing in an afternoon's amateur boxing in Wythenshawe.

First up for MBBC was Ian Barton, who hadn't had an outing since his appearance in London.

He took on an old opponent in Manx ABC's Lee Ashton.

Barton faced Ashton last season while representing Staffordshire, and this this was another great contest.

Both young boxers have gained more experience and, looking like seasoned fighters, they were throwing clean punches and each scored well.

After a close contest the decision went in favour of the Manx lad.

Also in action for MBBC was David Murphy, in his second appearance of the year.

Murphy had not boxed since his last bout in Ireland, and his opponent was Danny Hindmarch from Barton ABC.

This was a bout arranged at the last minute, with the Barton lad being far more experienced than Murphy.

Hindmarch was a strong southpaw and came forward from the opening bell, which caused Murphy a few problems.

The Macc fighter didn't find his range until the first round had been completed, in favour of Hindmarch.

Murphy put in a strong challenge in the third round but the points deficit from the opener cost him dearly.

Although Hindmarch had tired, he had done enough to gain the win on points.

MBBC coach Jez Hough said: "This was a good workout for Murphy ahead of his forthcoming championship bid.

"Thanks to all those supporting the club. Without them, we couldn't exist."
