Away-day battles for Macc fighters

2/ 5/2007

IN THE ABA Novice championships in Wythenshawe, Macclesfield BBC's welterweight Joe Collins claimed a hard earned win.

Fighting for the quarter-finals of the regional East Lancashire title, 20-year old Collins was pitted against Paramount ABC's Goulden.

The opening round got off to an even pace, with both fighters measuring each other's range. As Collins began to land some combinations, Goulden was leftholding on towards the end of the first.

Both boxers raised the pace in the second, landing some fine combinations.

Despite receiving two warnings by the referee for holding, the computerised scoring system had the Paramount boxer edging ahead.

In the final round, Collins came out strongly, and Goulden was given his final warning for holding and the official signalled a points deduction.

Collins landed with an accurate lead right, followed by a left body shot that buckled Goulden's legs.

Collins had the upper edge on his opponent and had earned the decision.

  • MBBC members have also been in action in London, as Ian Barton and Liam Hanrahan made the journey to York Hall in Bethnal Green for the quarter-finals of the National Junior ABA championships.

Fifteen-year old Barton was competing in the class 4 80kg, against local fighter Mohammed Jarrat from All Stars ABC.

Although Jarrat had the edge in size and weight, Barton, who qualified as North West County champion, gave the Londoner a battle, but the decision, after a close fight, went to Jarrat.

Hanarahan faced Gibbs of Nemesis ABC, a very experienced boxer with 40 fights under his belt.

Hanrahan landed several four and five-punch combinations, keeping Gibbs on the back foot throughout.

Gibbs struggled to breach the Macc fighter's guard and score any points, but a controversial home judges' decision was given to Gibbs.
