SHRIGLEY Hall's Cheshire star James Murphy and his partner Tommy McCormack from Styal hotted up the pace for the Alliance amateur Order of Merit with a second successive victory at Hazel Grove.

Tommy is currently top of the merit list but James is a mere 1.5 points behind him with all to play for in the last lap of the Alliance winter season.

They posted an impressive 48 points to finish a shot clear of Russ Johnson, father of sponsor Anton Johnson, of Warrington Golf Club and his partner Peter Abbott.

Fairfield legend Bob Davenport and club colleague Steve Thomas were third with 46 points.

Tim Maxwell celebrated his new appointment as Knutsford's professional with the top individual pro score of 41.

And Tim found an ideal partner in Wychwood Park amateur Melvin Thompson as they won the pro-am section with a huge 50 points.

Next in were North Manchester duo Jason Peel and Mark Towler with 47 points, two clear of Marple assistant pro Lee Thorneycroft and Dave Hodkinson.

Davenport's men played a singles Stableford and Mike Doherty was a clear winner of Division One with 38 points, four clear of Ray Brown.

Laurie Chick was an equally emphatic leader in Division Two, posting 39 points to finish four ahead of Mike Upton.

It was much closer in Division Three with Brian Leyland winning a cpo on 36 points from Jim Leonard.

A Sunday Stableford at Styal saw Mike McGuigan lead in with 38 points, three clear of John Molloy and Martin Finegan.

Winter League action at Styal had Mike Burchell top of the shop in Division One with 42 points from Andy Robinson (40) and Dave Caddick and L Potts (38).

A Banfield was out on his own in Division Two, winning by three shots from Chris Scraffin and D Nesbitt.

Styal seniors played a singles Stableford and John Fishwick was a clear winner on 42 points ahead of John Smith and Ray Morris (both 39) and David Hollick (38).

Styal ladies played two Stableford competitions and the first was taken by Joan Doyle (18) from Helen Billington and Enid Bloxham (both 14).

Gill James led in a full-course Stableford with a useful 34-pointer from Sue Buller (33) and Nancy Chorlton (31).
