Poynt-ing the way to the top

SATURDAY saw the all-important local derby between Poynton first team and Stockport.

The previous night was the club's annual dinner but, with the Division Two title at stake, the players abstained and got their reward with a thumping 24-4 win over their arch-rivals.

Poynton's first team arrived at Cale Green in confident mood and, from the first whistle, attacked from the face and scored.

By the end of the first quarter, the visitors were 7-0 ahead. The second quarter followed the same pattern and, by half-time, Poynton led 13-1 and were well on the way to their first title in six years.

The second-half pattern was the same, with Poynton centres Tom Giddings and Jan Robinson feeding the attack.

By the final whistle, the convincing result was achieved. Man of the match Sam Russell led the attack with nine goals and three assists, and the win caps a wonderful season for Poynton, whose other goals were scored by Rob Holmes (6), Simon McGuigan (3), Sam Davison (3), Doug Martin (2) and Alix Davison.

• THE club's most valuable player awards were presented at the previous night's dinner, and the first team's award went to Simon McGuigan.

The A team award went to Chris Aitchison and the B team's was presented to promising defender Ash Daniels.
