Moores next in line if Fletcher exits?

31/ 1/2007

MACCLESFIELD-BORN cricket coach Peter Moores may be in line for the plum job in the English game, if the speculation about Duncan Fletcher's position sees him ousted.

The Zimbabwean coach has been under fire throughout England's disastrous winter tour of Australia and has been given the 'poisoned chalice' of ECB chairman David Morgan's vote of confidence.

Should Fletcher leave the post, 44-year old Moores would be among the favourites to take over.

The former King's School pupil scored more than 7,000 first-class runs and took more than 500 dismissals as a wicketkeeper for Worcestershire and Sussex.

As a coach, Moores guided Sussex to three titles before following the great Rod Marsh as director of the National Cricket Centre in 2005.

He also coached the England A squad on the 2000/2001 West Indies tour.
