Macclesfield Town Ladies 2
Buxton Ladies 2

MATCHES between these local rivals are always closely fought and this first game after the Christmas break was no exception.

On a heavy pitch, both sides still managed to play good football most of the time, although some lack of match fitness was evident by the end of the 90 minutes.

Macclesfield took an early lead when a good move started by left back Kati Hogan ended with a typically strong run by Jade Treanor who held off the defender and struck a powerful shot well past the keeper.

The home side deserved their lead but had some scares in their own goal area. Star player Chris Riley had to go full stretch to push a drive past the post and another shot bounced off the bar to safety.

At the other end, the Silkgirls could have twice extended their score before half-time but were denied by good saves from the Buxton keeper.

The visitors came out strongly in the second half and put Macc under pressure, and were rewarded with an equaliser after 15 minutes.

Both teams went in search of the lead and had good chances, but it was the home side which edged in front through a super goal from Jenna Mape, who unleashed an accurate long drive over the keeper into the top of the net.

Although they were 2-1 up, Macc continued to press for another goal as it was not likely to be enough against a good Buxton side.

It took a fine one-handed save by Riley followed by a goal line clearance by Jo Webb to keep them out, but shortly afterwards Buxton levelled with a good strike.

Treanor was causing constant problems to the opposition defence and was unlucky not to help Macc regain the lead; while another tremendous save by Riley denied Buxton.

The game ended with both teams still threatening to get a last minute winner, but the draw was fair result, with both sides having the benefit of two keepers in fine form.

Team: Chris Riley, Kati Hogan. Jo Webb, Jodie Coutts, Vicky Jepson, Jade Treanor, Krista Oakes, Sophie Massey, Farah Damani, Sophie Thomason, Jenna Mape, Beth Clarke.
