Riders at the ready for Wheelers race

20/12/2006

MACCLESFIELD Wheelers are gearing up for one of the highlights of their cycling calendar.

The Wheelers' Bikes Supacross takes place next Wednesday (December 27) and some of the best cyclocross riders in the United Kingdom are expected to be racing as they hone their form in preparation for next month's National Championships.

The Supacross event has gone from strength to strength since it was first staged more than 20 years ago and has achieved A category status on the BCCC calendar.

The Supacross always attracts some of the best cyclocross riders in the UK, and favourites for the top places include Liam Killeen (Specialized), the winner in 2003 and 2004, and last year's winner, Paul Oldham of Hope Factory Racing.

Local favourite Nick Craig (Scott UK), winner of a record four Supacross events, is also expected to make a strong showing.

Although the start sheet has yet to be finalised, the event is likely to prove as popular as last month's Wheelers Post Office cyclocross, in which 141 riders competed across the programme of events.

The venue is, as in previous years, South Park.

Event 1, the Nimrod Youth Scramble, starts at 11.15am, followed by the Under 12s Mini Cross at 12 noon. The main event, the Bikes Supacross, starts at 1.15pm.

Time trial news

BRAVING the winter weather to ride the Manchester and District Christmas 10-mile time trial at Byley at the weekend, Macclesfield Wheelers came away with the fastest time prize.

The Wheelers' Roger Wrenn finished in a time of 27.36, Simon Ward in 25.45 and Graham Trevena in 24:50.

Trevena also won the Jim Broom Trophy for the fastest Manchester and District rider.
