Macc boxers' mixed fortunes

20/12/2006

MACCLESFIELD Boys Boxing Club boxed in Golden hill, Stoke on Trent, on Friday night at Tom Lowe ABC's show.

First up for Macclesfield was Jonathon Thomson against J Malkin of Tom Lowe ABC.

Thompson was on form, boxing brilliantly making his coaches (including his father) very proud, doing as he was told with long range shots off the back foot.

Although on the night he didn't get the result his outing deserved, he showed good defence work, clean punches and should be proud of his performance.

Second into the ring for Macclesfield was Joe Collins, one of the club's more experienced boxers. He took on Fox ABC's Lewtas, who was a strong kid with fast work-rate from the start.

Collins showed his experience, dealing with Lewtas from the off. He showed a good ability to defend then picked his shots to cause Lewtas some real problems, but this wasn't rewarded.

Collins can consider himself unlucky not to have been awarded the decision, which went Lewtas' way by a majority.

Macc's third fighter on the night was John Watson, in his debut bout for the club against Tom Lowe's West.

This was a clean bout with Watson growing in confidence as the match went on, parrying shots then counter punching with straight accurate shots.

From the opening bell Watson was able to score well with the judges to take the victory.

Fourth was Steven Dudley-Brown against Tom Lowe's Dytiche.

The visiting fighter was confident from the bell, throwing strong, heavy punches against the more experienced opponent.

Dudley-Brown proved to be too much for the local lad, and Dytiche retired at the end of the first round.

Each fighter can be proud of his showing and all four are sure to benefit from the experience.

Macclesfield coach Kevin Bradbury said: "This was a good night with all the coaches working as team in order to get the lads in the ring consecutively one after another.

"I'd also like to thank the supporters, parents and the coaches. It's been a good year so far."

The coach added that plans for the club in 2007 are coming together. He said: "Many local tradesmen have pulled together free of charge to help with the conversion of new premises.

Although we're not quite there yet, we hope to move in as soon as possible."

n MACCLESFIELD BBC is staging an exhibition show on February 9 at Wilmslow Leisure Centre.

The 2006 event was a sell-out, so those looking to go along should contact Kevin on 01625 265572.
