Kings take rugby crown

26/ 7/2006

THE FINAL of Macclesfield Rugby Club's annual summer tournament took place at the weekend, and Kings School came out on top to upset the form book.

Favourites for the Summer 7's competition, Age Before Beauty, did not lose a game over the eight weeks of the group stages and also registered an impressive try aggregate.

The two finalists met in the league stage, and Age scored a last-minute try to snatch a draw from the game.

Kings took the early advantage in the final, taking a lead in the opening minutes, and they were 3-0 in front at half-time.

After the break, Age Before Beauty fought back, but player of the tournament Dave Williams was creating numerous opportunities for Kings to extend their lead.

Age's Nathan Thomas and Tom Naul tried to rally their troops but Kings' tails were up and they scored a couple of exceptional tries to win 7-2 and take home the trophy.

Club spokesman Dave Ancell said: "With half of their team just returning from a week in the sun, Age Before Beauty were probably not as fresh as they could have been, but the game was played in an excellent spirit by both teams and it was great to watch."

The third-place play-off also took place at the Priory Park venue, and Titans ran out 4-1 winners over a scratch U-16 side.

The tournament saw more than 100 competitiors take part in Wednesday evening games and the rest of the play-offs included fine wins for an improving St George over the Colts, and for Jonny's Dream Team against The Good, The Bad and The Ugly to claim sixth spot.

The aim of the touch-rugby competition is to include players of all abilities, provide teams with matches over the summer break and to encourage new players into the sport.

The event was sponsored by Diadora, Casper, Macclesfield RUFC and the Army, and Captain Chris Chudleigh said: "The Army are keen to get involved in youth sports as it helps young people to understand the need for health awareness."
