Browning puts in the hard yards

MANY players at Macclesfield travel far and wide to pull on the blue shirt on a Saturday afternoon, but any journeys made to Priory Park are easily dwarfed by the efforts of George Browning.

Having left Macclesfield due to work commitments during the summer, the centre was expected to find another club near to his new home in London.

But such is his commitment to Macc that whenever he is available for selection, the 22-year-old happily makes the mammoth 400-mile round trip to help his beloved Blues get their league campaign back on track.

Unfortunately, the injury-plagued Browning will not be travelling to leaders Nuneaton on Saturday after undergoing an operation after breaking his finger for the fifth time in the weekend's victory against New Brighton.

"I absolutely love playing for Macc and there isn't anyone else I'd rather play for this season," said Browning, who has also had two reconstructions of his knee ligaments, two broken noses and several cartilage removal operations.

"I know we are always harping on about the squad, but I have been to a couple of clubs down south who play at a similar level to us and the players there are, quite simply, just average.

"The playing ability of the boys at Macc is remarkable. We don't know how lucky we are sometimes but I wish we'd get it right on the pitch more often."

In the changing rooms at fortress Priory, Browning is somewhat of a talisman among his peers. His huge hits in defence contrasting with his eccentric charm off the field, the advertising executive, known as 'G-Man', is a firm favourite at SK10.

Finishing on the losing side just once so far this season, Browning's contribution on the field cannot be overstated and his absence is a massive blow as Macc travel to unbeaten Nuneaton hoping to build on a run of three successive victories.

Influential pair Andy Rice and Ross Whinney will also be absent through injury.
