LOCAL knowledge provided the key to victory for the second week in succession as a full field of Manchester Alliance professionals and amateurs enjoyed a Mottram Hall course.

Leading the pro am section was Mottram pro Tim Maxwell who partnered Mo Rawthore of Sale, formerly of Mottram Hall, to a winning 39 points.

But they needed a countback to beat off the Styal challenge from Glynn Traynor and England Elite star David Horsey.

Four pairs on 38 points were led in by Mark Smith and Mike Scowcroft of Ashton-under-Lyne.

Also on 38 were Mike Hollingworth (Denton) and Craig Oakes (Ashton-under-Lyne), Steve Pownell and John Bell (Fairfield) and Craig Daggitt and Joe Kirwan (Bramhall)

Leading the am section in another close finish were Alan Pengelly and Phil Smethurst from Shrigley Hall.

They won a cpo on 39 points from Jim Cox and Paul Nuttall of Denton and John Moorfield and David Rowland of Leigh.

Medal action at Shrigley Hall saw Mark Taylor in fine form winning division one with a nett 67, which gave him the edge from young gun Matt Dixon (69) and John Phillips (71).

The score of the day came in division two as Vincent Smyth returned a fabulous 61, which left him well clear of runner-up Ben Etherington (71).

Winter Pairs action at Shrigley had P Whitehurst and P Cartledge ruling the roost with 42 points, with J Millard and D Sutcliffe a point off the pace.
