New Mills feel the Power

7/12/2005

FORMER Silkmen legend Phil Power made a triumphant return to Moss Rose when he scored in FC United's 5-0 demolition of New Mills.

The Maltese Falcon, now assistant manager of the Manchester United fans' breakaway team, came on as a second-half substitute to bring the memories flooding back.

The North West Counties Division Two Trophy clash was switched from New Mills' home to the Silkmen's ground due to concerns about how the pitch would hold up in heavy rain, and it proved a good one as the heavens opened for the majority of the game.

More than 1,400 supporters turned out to see Simon Carden's opener and Steve Torpey smashed a fine hat-trick before Power completed the High Peak side's misery with a goal in the last minute.

It was a sweet moment for the veteran striker as he still holds fond feelings for Macclesfield Town and sealed FC United's place in the quarter-finals.
