Clegg finishes on high

AFTER a stop-start season Macclesfield-based Topspeed Racing ended their 2004 ARP Formula Three season in fine style with a second place finish and class win at Donnington Park.
The Cheshire Building Society-backed team have struggled through a reliability and incident-plagued season and, while their driver Steve Clegg has produced front-row qualifying results and raced high up the order, disappointment has ensued with retirement only a few laps from home.
However, Sunday was to bring a marked change in the Broken Cross racer's fortunes, with Clegg clinching fourth place on the final lap of the damp morning's qualifying.
After a quick change to wet tyres, Clegg took second place on the first corner and held on resolutely as the rain poured.
After the race, Clegg commented: "Wet or dry, I thought we were going to do well today, but with our 1986 Reynard our best chance against a field of very modern 2001 Dallaras was always going to be in the rain and I am delighted to end the season on a high."
