POYNTON skipper Steve Douglas - struggled to make an impact against champions Bowden last weekend.
A toothless total
7/ 7/2004
FORLORN Poynton failed to protect an inadequate total against high-flying Bowdon, a club who has dominated the local scene for the past decade.
The foundations for victory were laid by an excellent Bowdon bowling performance, and eight wickets bowled or lbw tells the story of just how accurate the bowlers were. Lancashire veteran Gary Yates was predictably a major handful, Guy Emmett bowled a tireless and very consistent spell of 22 overs, and 16-year-old Chris Ashling showed his promise with some excellent deliveries to dismiss the lower order.
An innings with a scoring rate of less than two per over still provided some excellent entertainment with the contest between Yates and Poynton's Ian Middlehurst. This battle saw Middlehurst hoist Yates for two excellent straight sixes, before Yates had the final word by dismissing the Poynton batsman. Nevertheless this was a welcome return to form for Middlehurst.
Stephen Ball got the Bowdon reply off to a good start with some aggressively struck boundaries, only for Poynton to fight back from 45/1 when Derwin Thompson removed Yates, the top run scorer in the league last year, and Ball in the same over.
In addition to his two wickets, Thompson beat the bat a number of times and asked questions of all the batsmen. Thompson, in common with all of the Poynton attack, bowled his heart out for the cause, but a composed innings from the experienced Jon Gray saw Bowdon home.
Ultimately, a Poynton scorecard with two scores above seven was no foundation for victory. There have now been four matches this season where Poynton have batted first and where scoring another 30-50 runs could have made a big difference to the course of the game.
