Dreaming of Royal Troon

FOUR local stars will be travelling across the Scottish border into Ayrshire this weekend looking to fulfil every golfer's dream by qualifying for the Open Championship at Royal Troon next week.

Each year it gets more difficult to join the elite in one of golf's world showpieces and this time Cheshire's teenage star David Horsey of Styal, Tim Maxwell, the teaching pro at Mottram Hall, Ian Ridgway the Europro player from High Legh Park and Tytherington amateur Mike Harrington will tee off with 320 others, many still among golf's big names, to try to secure one of the 12 qualifying slots on offer.

Playing at Prestbury, David Horsey carded a one-under par 70 to finish in the top five while Tim Maxwell was a shot behind him.

Ian Ridgway also posted a 71 while Mike Harrington was locked with several others on the final qualifying score of 72 with 20 making the trip over the border with their dreams still intact.

Prestbury proved to be a superb new venue for the Open Championship qualifying round - a role it will enjoy for the next five years.

Players, R and A officials and spectators were delighted with the quality and challenge of the magnificent course. And off the course everything ran as smooth as Macclesfield silk with every need courteously and efficiently dealt with as the club and their members did themselves proud.
