Rooney-mania at Macc

26/ 5/2004

ROONEY-MANIA is sweeping through Macclesfield - but England's teenage striker is not swapping Portugal for Moss Rose.

The Silkmen have brought in their own Rooney, 19-year-old forward Tommy, the cousin of Everton and England's teenage star Wayne.

Rooney has joined Brian Horton's Silkmen in search of first-team football after being released by Tranmere and is keen to make an impression at the club.

He said: "I'd been at Tranmere since I was 14 but I broke my foot and didn't really get a chance with the first team, despite scoring quite a few goals for the reserves and the youth team," explained the die-hard Everton fan, who sat and cheered in the Goodison stands when Wayne burst onto the scene in October 2002 with a wonder goal to beat Arsenal.

"But when Brian Horton gave me a ring to come down for a trial at Macclesfield, I jumped at the chance."

"There's a good set-up at the club and I'm just looking forward to getting down to pre-season training on June 30 and then taking it from there."
