A taste of defeat

19/ 5/2004

POYNTON crashed to their first defeat in recent memory after they were outplayed by an unquestionably talented Oulton Park side.

The pitch was indeed poor, but Poynton's defeat came about through a largely self-inflicted batting collapse.

A brief period where Brian Kingham and Derwin Thompson hit some excellent boundaries was about the only thing Poynton had to cheer all day.

A decent position at 25/1 from seven overs did not last long, and 12 overs later the pendulum had well and truly swung Oulton's way, as they took three wickets for the addition of only six runs.

Danny Jones claimed each of the first three wickets, then his brother Chris took over, turning the ball considerably and claiming the next three.

At 49/6, the core of Poynton's batting had gone, but with too many having contributed to their own downfall just as they were starting to look settled.

Stuart Eaton then worked his way through the lower order, and although Oulton were delayed somewhat by the last pair, the final total was well below what might have been competitive.

Any hope of a miracle was swiftly removed by Australian batsman Liam Buchanan, who hit eight boundaries in a belligerent knock. When he was dismissed for 42, the score was only 46! Danny Leech and Paul Berry then saw their side home with few more alarms, the match ending with 45 overs of playing time still left.

Poynton knew that they would be on the wrong end of a mauling at some stage this year. However only two weeks previously they were on a major high after the win at Chester Boughton Hall. What is crucial now is that the squad responds in the right way to this result.
