Jason strikes gold

5/ 5/2004

POYNTON returned from Chester Boughton Hall's excellent ground with an impressive victory against last year's fourth placed team.

They got off to a good start with Jason Rudge dominating the scoring in the opening overs, and his stand of 76 for the third wicket with David Watkins left Poynton well placed at 102/2.

Three quick wickets followed, including that of Rudge after reaching his first fifty for the club, but Simon Turner and Carlyle Stuart both made valuable contributions to ensure four batting bonus points.

The final total, however, was one that Chester felt confident of overhauling. Much of the damage had been done by spinner Robin Fisher, a regular member of the county side for some years.

Watkins enjoyed some early success against him, but once Fisher took his first wicket, six more followed at a cost of only nine runs.

What followed though was a career best spell of bowling from Tim Reynolds that stunned Chester and left Poynton jubilant.

His sixth wicket, to possibly the best delivery of what had already been a superlative effort, left the home side reeling on 56-7.

Rudge followed up his batting effort with four catches behind the wicket during the spell.

Once Reynolds finally took his sweater, the Chester lower order rallied with Jack Yates adding 50 with Fisher, but the first of two wickets from Jamie Maltman finally broke the resistance.

The match then ended in strange fashion with 17.4 overs still remaining, as Yates was run out as he ambled back to the crease mistakenly believing he had hit a boundary, but few could dispute that Poynton had fully deserved their win.

With more tough games coming up, this result should hopefully be a massive confidence boost for Poynton.
