DANNY Adams
Adams on his way to Edgeley?
25/ 2/2004
LONG-SERVING full-back Danny Adams has been training with Stockport County this week after handing a transfer request in at Moss Rose.
The popular defender, a veteran of over 170 games since his switch from Altrincham three years ago, requested to move clubs after failing to agree a new deal offered to him a fortnight ago.
Talking after the 1-1 draw with Carlisle United, Macc boss John Askey made it clear that he only wanted to select players who wanted to be at the club - and Adams was offered the chance to train under his old mentor Sammy McIlroy at Stockport.
Askey said: "I'm very sorry to see Danny leave because he has been a great player for Macclesfield Town, but he wants to go elsewhere and that means I have got to look for someone to replace him."
"At this moment in time I need people who are committed to the club. He has not fallen out with anyone but he is in a position where he doesn't want to play for the club."
Later in the week, he added: "We don't know what's happening with Danny, it's all up in the air at the moment."
As reported in Express Sport in November, McIlroy had considered Adams as a possible transfer target before eventually signing former Aston Villa left-back Danny Jackman.
The Macc legend angrily denied claims from inside Moss Rose that he had 'tapped' Adams for a transfer, but the club insist no such claim was ever made.
Adams refused an initial contract offer before Christmas, but was one of only two players offered another deal in the New Year.
Club directors have said they want to make sure the Silkmen are safe before offering new contracts to several other players.
- What do you think? Should Macc be doing more to keep Adams, or has he let the club down by handing in a transfer request? Email the fans forum at maccsport@gmwn.co.uk
