Tom hits the top

MACCLESFIELD Express cub sports reporter Tom Green has won the prestigious Rugby World Magazine 'Young Reporter of the Year' competition.

The King's School Sixth Form student has been supplying the Express with King's first team reports for the last two years and caught the eye of the judges for a 250 word report he submitted to the glossy national magazine.

Tom, 17, from Newland Drive, Wilmslow, is studying English Literature, Philosophy and Business Studies and hopes to read English at either Sheffield or Newcastle universities before going to journalism college.

As well as writing for the Express, Tom helps to write and edit the school's newsletter "King's Colours" and is currently drafting the King's rugby department's fundraising brochure for their forthcoming tour of South Africa.

Tom said: "I love sports and I love writing so a career in sports journalism really would seem to be the perfect combination."

A Sale Sharks and Manchester United fan, Tom would hope to report from either Old Trafford or Edgeley Park rather than the Moss Rose, and said: "I'm afraid I've never seen the Silkmen play."

Express Group Sports Editor Simon Smedley said: "Tom is doing exactly the right thing if he wants a career in sports journalism."

"Entry into the profession is increasingly competitive and to be able to show an editor a scrap book of published stories is likely to be just as impressive as a lengthy list of academic credits."

Tom wins £100 and an expenses paid trip to a glittering awards ceremony in London.
