SWIMMING: Swimmer Daniel Cotterill has won a gold medal in the 50-metres backstroke in the Association of Junior Independent Schools North-west regional gala.

The ten-year-old King's School pupil, of Old Buxton Road, Macclesfield, triumphed even though his favourite stroke is freestyle.

As well as training with King's and captaining their junior swimming team, Daniel is a budding member of the Satellite club - training for four-and-a-half hours every week, normally covering 10,000 metres over four training sessions.

Daniel, however, has a modest attitude about his long-term future.

"I love my swimming, but who knows what I will do in the future - I'll just try my best."

Debbie Baker, physical education teacher, said: "Danny's is a fantastic achievement. The standard of competition is extremely high in the AJIS event and his gold medal is testament to his hard-work and dedication."

Other King's stars included Sam Barratt, who won the under-ten 25-metres butterfly.

Bronze medal winners were Chris Smith in the under-ten individual medley and Seb Sheratte in the under-11 individual medley.

The under-ten medley relay team of Chris Smith, Jake Knowles, Sam Barratt and Harry Thompson also took bronze.
