Mac (under) the knife

18/12/2002

SOCCER: Steve Macauley will go into hospital today (Wednesday) for an exploratory operation on his knee.

The operation will curtail the Rochdale defender's successful one-month loan spell at Macclesfield.

Macauley had been carrying the injury for some time, and Macclesfield and Rochdale have agreed the player should have the operation.

The 33-year-old played four matches at the heart of Macclesfield's defence during his temporary stay at the Moss Rose.

He has said that he would love to make the move permanent, after falling out of favour with Rochdale boss Paul Simpson.

Dale allowed Macauley to play for Macc in the FA Cup earlier this month - the clearest indication yet that Simpson is ready to let the defender go.

But Macclesfield are thought to be keen to ensure that Macauley's knee problem is not serious before entering any talks about extending his stay.
