From Mediterranean to Midlands
10/12/2002
RU - THE CLUBMAN: It's a quick-fire dose of reality in our weekly rugby union column.
I RETURNED to the UK after a superb fortnight in the sunshine of Andalucia - and went straight back reality (and the oval ball) with a trip to the Midlands.
Saturday's trip to Nuneaton saw the meeting of two unbeaten sides a division apart.
The game began at a frenetic pace, with Nuneaton scoring before Macc had even touched the ball. The omens looked bleak.
This Macclesfield side is made of stern stuff, though. They came back with a converted try to level things and could have gone ahead.
But as the interval came, the home side went in front with an injury time try after at least one 'crossing' in the process.
In the end, Nuneaton deserved the victory, even if the winning margin was a little flattering.
Macclesfield can take some comfort in the way they played, but the errors that saw ball lost in the tackle to a side well equipped to turn defence into attack must be sorted out on the training field.
It will be interesting to watch the progress of both sides this season.
Nuneaton have started well in Division Three North, beating New Brighton, Waterloo and Preston Grasshoppers.
We can now fully concentrate on progress in North One without a long cup run to worry about.
And it is in North One that we can now mount a challenge to be in a promotion spot come next April.
Tomorrow night (Wednesday, December 11) it is MRUFC's financial AGM at the club, from 8.30pm.
If you wish to have an update on matters fiscal come along and listen (and question).
The following day (Thursday) it is the first social occasion of the season, when president Albert Simpson invites members to a 'Cheese and Wine' evening, starting at 8pm.
Contact Albert on 01625 429100 if you wish to attend.
Functions such as these should be well patronised, so that we make full use of our excellent facilities and taste that nice Hydes beer.
Not much more to be said this week, but let's have a full house on Saturday when we entertain West Park St Helens (3pm) in what is sure to be a tough encounter.
Games for Saturday:
1st v West Park St Helens - League (home) - 3pm.
2nd v Leek (home)
3rd - TBA
4th v Leek (away)
Vets v Waterloo (home)
