Hillaby hits heights

9/10/2002

CRICKET: Macclesfield bowler Mark Hillaby has been named as the Cheshire County Cricket League's player of the year.

Hillaby took 73 wickets - more than anybody else in the league - as Macclesfield came within two points of claiming the Murray Smith Premier League title this year.

The fast bowler took more than half of the vote for the Keith Belfield player of the year trophy, which he received at the league's annual presentation dinner at Mere golf and country club.

Former Bath, England and British Lions rugby union international Gareth Chilcott was the guest speaker at the dinner as the Murray Smith Cheshire County Cricket League honoured its best performers of 2002.

There was more joy for our local sides when Poynton's Derwin Thompson scooped the Division Two player of the year award.

The Barbadian batsman hit three centuries, another nine half-centuries and averaged 95 in a season's total of 1,134.
