Silkmen set sights

SOCCER: The target is 2,000. That is how many home fans Macclesfield Town want to see at each of their next two home games.

Silkmen vice-chairman Rob Bickerton has called on the Macclesfield public to get down to the Moss Rose for crucial games against Preston North End and Boston United.

First Division Preston, managed by former Scotland boss Craig Brown, visit the Moss next Tuesday (October 1) for a Worthington Cup second round tie (kick off 7.45pm).

While a week on Saturday (October 5) sees the Silkmen face a must-win basement clash with second-from-bottom Boston.

The Silkmen attracted just 1,929 fans for the visit of Scunthorpe last Saturday.

It was the fourth home game in a row that Macc had fallen short of the club's budgeted break-even gate of around 2,100.

The Silkmen believe that 2,000 Macc followers - added to the visiting contingent - will get the gates back up above that break-even figure.

Bickerton said there have been encouraging signs despite recent home attendances.

He said: "The average crowd is up by about 100 on the same stage last season, which is a significant increase.

"But the next two games are incredibly important for Macclesfield Town.

"The Preston game gives us an opportunity to progress in the Worthington Cup, while the Boston game will be a real six-pointer.

"Our aim is to get 2,000 home fans at each of those two games.

"So if Macclesfield Town means anything to you, then please come to those two games and give us your support."
