31/ 7/2002

ATHLETICS: Leading English sprinter Darren Campbell took time out from the Commonwealth Games to visit Macclesfield's athletics track.

Campbell, who carried the England team flag at last week's spectacular opening ceremony, encouraged young athletes to try their hand at a series of events.

The Mancunian, who won a bronze in the 200m, chatted with youngsters and even displayed his hitherto unknown prowess at hurdling.

Campbell's visit was part of the star:track scheme which encourages development of young athletes at grass-root level.

Over 30,000 youngsters are expected to take part in the scheme over the summer.
