Going for gold

RIFLING: Financial adviser Michael Babb's bid for Commonwealth shooting gold begins on Sunday.

Babb is gearing up for both the pairs and single prone rifle events.

Unfortunately for local fans it is being hosted at the Lord Roberts Centre in Bisley, Surrey, because there are no suitable outdoor ranges in Manchester.

But Michael, 38, from Upton Priory, has pledged to do his best for town and country.

Michael, speaking from Surrey, was upbeat: "The preparations have been going really well.

"Everything has gone according to plan and I have completed all the training which my coach, Alastair Allen, set out.

"I'm just waiting for the competition to get started now."

He will be shooting a single-shot purpose built bolt action Diana rifle, and will be aiming for a bullseye smaller than a five pence piece on a target 150ft away 60 times in 75 minutes.

Michael, who recently won gold at a World Championship event in Milan, said ten competitors had a chance of winning.

The pairs event - Neil Day is his shooting partner - is on Sunday, July 28, and the individual competition is on Thursday, August 1.

The competitions start in the morning and last all day.
