SOCCER: Steve Macauley is a step closer to joining Macclesfield Town permanently after agreeing to train with the club.
The 33-year-old Crewe defender is training with the club this week - and is expected to discuss a permanent deal as soon as manager David Moss is given a budget by the board.
Moss is expected to be given a budget when the board meets tomorrow night (Thursday).
Moss is keen to press ahead with the signing of Macauley, as well as tying up goalkeeper Steve Wilson and midfielders Matt Woolley, Karl Munroe and Kevin Keen on new contracts.
Macauley's contract at Crewe is about to run out, and manager Dario Gradi has said that it will not be renewed.
Moss said: "Steve Macauley is spending the week with us, which is a good sign. At the moment, we are no further down the road to signing him than we were before.
"But I've invited him to come in, and I'm happy that he's agreed to do so.
"He's a fit lad, and a very good professional. He's got a good attitude."
