Silkmen grab a late leveller

27/12/2001

SOCCER: Macclesfield 1 Halifax Town 1

Jeff Smith grabbed an injury time equaliser against 10-man bottom club Halifax.

The Bolton loan signing lashed home the leveller off a Darren Tinson cross, after the Shaymen had taken an undeserved 33rd minute lead through Steve Bushell.

Smith's goal was just rewards for Macclesfield, who had worked hard on and off-the-field to dominate a game which had been threatened by frost and was only given the go-ahead 15 minutes before the start of the game.

The left winger had almost given Macc a 10th minute lead but struck his shot over the bar.

Bushell broke the deadlock for 'Fax just after the half hour, which prompted Macc's best move of the half when Lee Glover's right wing cross was pulled wide by Rickie Lambert with the goal at his mercy.

The visitors were reduced to 10-men on 56 minutes. Andy Woodward's heavy challenge on Danny Williams ended with the Shayman throwing a punch and earning a red card.

The remaining 35 minutes were dominated by Macc and Smith's goal was deserved.

Macc could have won the game four minutes into injury time but Lambert couldn't convert a chance created by Kevin Keen.
