Shrews foil Silkmen

24/12/2001

SOCCER: Shrewsbury Town 1 Macclesfield 1

A super Lee Glover goal was enough for Macc to earn a tough point at Shrewsbury.

The striker turned three defenders on the edge of the box before rifling the ball home in the 25th minute.

Prolific scorer Luke Rodgers ensured the points were shared with a 71st minute volley, but Macc did enough to still have won the game.

Shrewsbury keeper Ian Dunbavin made a series of great stops - twice denying Chris Byrne with exceptional saves.

Glover almost stole it for the Silkmen with an 80th minute effort which Dunbavin, again, somehow managed to stop.

After the game Dave Moss praised Macclesfield.

He said: ''The goal was typical Lee. The ball came into his feet, he then dummied the defence and it was a super finish from a quality player now on the top of his game.''

On-loan Bolton winger Jeff Smith, who has extended his stay at Moss Rose for a further month, also got a mention.

''Jeff is good and gives us balance on the left hand side. He's very clever when he gets into position. He gets beyond the defenders and doesn't panic and when he wants somebody to pick out there's nobody better than Chris Byrne,'' Moss added.
