Macc make history

18/12/2001

RU: Ampthill 12 Macclesfield 31

Macclesfield waltzed into the RFU Intermediate Cup sixth round for the first time in their history.

The 19-point win puts them into the last 16 of the competition - which was won by Manchester outfit Aldwinians at Twickenham three seasons ago.

Macc's domination was so emphatic that the visitors pack won six scrums against the head.

Phil Macey exchanged penalties with his opposite number in the first half before a touchdown put Macc on their way.

Jamie Miller picked up the loose ball in his own half and arced his way past the defence. Winger John Plant added another wide out on the stroke of half time.

Further penalties followed for the hosts but Macc continued to dominate as they blooded some young replacements.

Fly-half Ben Coulbeck's introduction was a success, touching down within five minutes and then adding the conversion.
