Gone in 60 seconds

17/12/2001

SOCCER: Macclesfield Town 2 Leyton Orient 1

The Silkmen wrapped up the points with a 60 seconds, double-strike.

The O's did the double over Macc last season and when the London-based side took an eighth minute lead through Steve Watts, many at the Moss must have felt a sense of déjà vu.

Watts bagged the opener after a mistake by loan-signing Steve Macauley left keeper Steve Wilson stranded.

But Macclesfield are made of stern stuff and soon began piling the pressure on the visitors.

Ricky Lambert saw a 25-yard effort slide inches wide on the quarter hour, before the young Merseysider's headed effort forced a great save from Orient keeper Scott Barrett.

On-loan winger Jeff Smith looked to have made the game level for the interval with a 43rd minute free-kick which beat the keeper.

Not so. One minute later and Chris Byrne gave Macc the lead as he half volleyed home a deflected Lambert shot.

Both Kevin Keen and Byrne came close to extending the lead in the second half, while Orient's Wayne Gray could only shoot straight at Wilson with a goal scoring chance.
