Director calls board to explain their motives

5/12/2001

SOCCER: Former Macclesfield Town vice chairman Jeremy Turner has hit out at the treatment dished out to directors Roy Higginbotham and Martin Lenton by the club's board.

Shareholders could call an EGM to force the board to fully explain their actions and motives he said.

Turner has revealed that the two directors were put under immense pressure by other members of the board to contribute up to £12,000 each to fill a gap in the Silkmen's finances.

It has transpired that all eight directors were asked to share in a loan (close to £100,000) to the club two weeks ago but Higginbotham and Lenton demurred.

"One of the directors then said he would pay his amount but wouldn't put the money in unless the other two resigned," said Turner.

"It's an absolute disgrace the way Martin, and Roy after 17 years, have been treated. They do a lot of important work for the club," he said.

Turner then backed his beleaguered colleagues and resigned on principle.

A minimum 15 shareholders are needed to call an EGM.

Macc chief executive Colin Garlick said he could not see what an EGM would achieve.

Roy Higginbotham is expected to take up a role as a non-board director.
