Glover settles penalty marathon

After three-and-a-half hours and 24 penalties, Lee Glover finally killed off Forest Green's FA Cup dreams with the decisive spot kick.

The sides had been locked at one apiece after normal and extra time of this replay.

Mark Cooper had given the Conference side a 29th minute lead with a free-kick, with Kevin Keen equalising for the Silkmen with a superb lob six minutes later.

After that neither side could be separated - although Macc's Steve Wilson made a superb extra-time penalty save from Cooper - and it then came down to a dramatic penalty shoot out.

All 11 players from both sides had taken their penalties before the matter was decided, with Alex Meechan and Rickie Lambert missing their efforts.

That brought original penalty takers Kevin Langan and Lee Glover back to the sport.

Langan blasted his spot kick over the bar, allowing Glover to stroke home the winner.

In normal time, both sides had chances to seal a win after Forest Green Rovers and Macclesfield were locked at 1-1.

Chris Byrne couldn't convert a great 38th minute move, scooping a Richard Tracey cross from the left over.

At the other end Martin Forster saw a headed goal on the hour disallowed due to a shove by Carl Heggs.

Four minutes from the end of normal time, Glover saw an effort flash over the bar after a Rickie Lambert cross.

Macclesfield now face Swansea in the second round at Moss Rose on December 8.
