Mansfield must not be repeated, chairman warns

SOCCER: Macclesfield Town chairman Eddie Furlong has thrown down the gauntlet to his players in a last ditch attempt to restore some pride.

Furlong and manager Gil Prescott were appalled by the Silkmen's lack of endeavour and effort in the 4-0 drubbing at Mansfield.

Furlong met with Prescott at the club's Derby Fields training ground on Tuesday morning and says there will be not be a repeat performance against Scunthorpe on Saturday.

"It was a bad game and a bad performance on Monday," he said.

"There is no excuse for the lack of effort and lack of application and not putting 100 per cent in.

"Saturday is now a massive game and the players have something to prove to themselves.

"There is no panic here at the moment. The crisis will be if that attitude repeats itself on Saturday."

"At least four of the players came up to me and said they were looking forward to Saturday to put things right.

"I knew from looking a their faces that they had thought about it.

"The players themselves don't need to be told what they didn't do at Mansfield. They know they have underperformed."

Chairman and manager feel the travelling fans were badly let down but the mood is bullish as the weekend approaches.

"I expect from the kick off there will be an explosion of effort from our players."

The horror show on Monday has been strictly a one off to date this season but the club cannot afford a repeat.

Off field commercial activities are gearing up impressively as the club strives for the platform upon which to build a team to be proud of.
