Macclesfield would have been happy to grab a point but could easily have returned from Rochdale with all three.
The Silkmen produced an array of chances to kill off the hosts after taking an early lead.
Lee Glover calmly put Macclesfield in the driving seat with an 18th minute penalty.
After that Macclesfield were in control and caused Rochdale a number of problems.
However, Rochdale levelled matters with a 25th minute equaliser - Tony Ford slotting the ball home.
Macclesfield substitute Richard Tracy went close for the Silkmen, although Rochdale's Kieron Durkin nearly stole the points against his former club - his lob just clearing the crossbar.
