THE King's School rugby first team has celebrated 75 years of rugby at the Macclesfield school by completing their first ever unbeaten season.
Against the cream of the Northern schools' circuit, the Macc lads played 15, won 14 and drew one game. They are one of just seven school sides nationwide to enjoy an unbeaten season this year.
Highlights included a 19-18 victory against Bradford Grammar School, a 13-0 win over Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Wakefield, a 21-14 defeat against Royal Grammar School Lancaster, when King's fought back from a 14-0 deficit at half time, and a thrilling 10-10 draw with Stonyhurst.
Their success has gained national recognition with scrum half David Williams being selected for the England training squad, while prop Chris Cowan and fly half David Jones made the Northern team. Altogether seven players represented Cheshire, making up nearly half the county team. Veteran coach Mark Hardbord, said: "At the start of the season we knew we had an exceptional upper sixth year. However, we had some injuries to key players, including skipper Frankie Barker, who was another England candidate, so had to rely on youngsters to provide cover and they all came through with flying colours."
Winger Ian Hart was the top scorer. Coach John Percival said: "He is one of the fastest wingmen in youth rugby in England this year."
