BURKE TO HIS BEST: Macc Wheelers’ Steve Burke put his injury problems behind him with a strong showing in Thirsk.
Wheelers go far and ride
24/ 9/2008
MACCLESFIELD Wheelers racing team travelled far and wide this weekend in search of fast times in some of the best weather conditions of the summer.
The furthest to travel was veteran time trialist Roger Wrenn, who rode the Port Talbot Wheelers 25-mile event in South Wales.
Wrenn recorded 54.59min for his second fastest ride at the distance this year.
Steve Burke made an astonishing return to racing after his recent operation when he finished fifth in the prestigious Yorkshire Road Club 50-mile time trial near Thirsk.
His time of 1.51.45 was the fastest by any Wheeler this year by several minutes.
Claire Logan also made a return to racing after injury when she recorded 24.52 in the Wigan Wheelers 10-mile event near Kendal.
In the same event junior Mike Cuming showed why many are tipping him as a future champion when he recorded 20.35.
Dave Higham and Warren Jackson stayed closer to home when they rode the Stone Wheelers 25 at Uttoxeter. Higham recorded 54.48 for his second fastest ever ride at the distance and Jackson recorded 59.49.
Jackson was also in action the next day when he rode the West Cheshire 25 Championship in 1.02.32.
Closer to home, Chris Edmondson was second in the Buxton CC hill climb at Whaley Bridge.
Veteran road racer Mick O’Connor had a busy but successful racing weekend. On Saturday he rode the 35-mile circuit race at Darley Moor near Ashbourne. In a furiously-paced event among competitors 15 years his junior, O’Connor held his own to take first in his age category.
On Sunday O’Connor travelled to Worcester for the Bush Healthcare RR over 48 miles on a demanding circuit. Despite a bout of cramp on the last lap O’Connor again contested a very tough uphill finish sprint to take third in his age group.
Pick of the road race results was the Wheelers one-two in the CDNW event at Elwick near Preston on Sunday. Father and son Mike and Dave Cuming broke away from the bunch and finished 36 seconds clear at the end of the 55-mile race.
