Close call but Ant just edged out

27/ 8/2008

WHEELCHAIR tennis star Antony Cotterill narrowly missed out on his second Quad singles title of the year, losing the final to a fellow Briton in three sets.

The Macclesfield player faced Chris Johnson in the final of the ITF2 Series event at the Salzburg Open.

And in a tight final, second-seed Johnson retained the title he won 12 months earlier, edging out Cotterill 6-3 2-6 6-4.

Cotterill, the tournament’s top seed, had a bye in the first round in Austria and eased past Patrick Sappino of France 6-1 6-1 in his semi-final.

But the world Quad number 15 couldn’t add the trophy to his previous win on this year’s NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

Johnson, from Hampshire, and Cotterill were separated by just one world ranking position going into the Austrian event.

It was Johnson who made his greater experience tell in the final, adding to his victory in the Wroclaw Cup in Poland in July.
