Poynton beat the drop

9/ 4/2008

HOCKEY: POYNTON secured their Premier League status with an impressive win at home to Chelmsford on Saturday, consigning the Essex side to next weekend’s play-off to decide who stays in the top flight.

This result put the final touch to Poynton’s great escape. Six weeks ago a play-off was looking like a good ending to a difficult season, but a finishing run of 10 points in five games ensured the Cheshire club have consolidated their position as one of the elite teams in English hockey.

This game was fraught with tension but Poynton started confidently and were the better side throughout the first half.

The all-important goal came just after half-time when captain Sinead McCarthy made a penetrating run from the 25 and found Kate Maltman at the far post.

Maltman, who has been Poynton’s best forward during this recent great run, made no mistake and, from that moment, Poynton were determined the Essex side would not come back.

The final quarter of the game was almost unbearable as Chelmsford pounded Poynton’s goal, but keeper Michelle Thomas was in magnificent form and there was no way through.

The final whistle sparked scenes of great celebration of a magnificent achievement and a day that players and supporters alike will remember for a long time.
