Alliance double for Carl

THE competitive nature of the Manchester Alliance winter competitions was shown for the fourth week in succession.

The competition was sponsored by Denton, Lancashire and England legend Bob Bardsley, who represents Footjoy.

The players had to cope with frozen greens but were very appreciative of the efforts of the staff at Blackley.

The duo of Shrigley Hall’s Carl Kennedy and Colin Owen of Birchwood eased to top spot in the am-am section with 36 points.

It was Kennedy’s second win in successive weeks after a long period of being in the Alliance wilderness.

It needed a card play-off to put Dukinfield’s Peter Dransfield and David Cooper into the runners-up slot from the Bolton duo of Ged Gaffey and Walter Gregory.

Werneth professional James Matterson scored his first-ever Alliance victory as he partnered club colleague Paul McGee to a winning 35 points to lead in from Leyland’s Colin Burgess and John Allott and James Hopley and Brian Sinclair.

Wilmslow ladies played a singles Stableford and Maureen Thompson led in Division One on 28 points, four clear of Linda Smith.

Pam Higham also posted 28 to win Division Two from Cindy Cottrill (27) and Diana Wills (24).

Styal seniors were in Winter League action and racking up the points were Ged Harrison (49) and Rodney Laverty, Peter Clough and Mike Eccles (all 47).

A Sunday Stableford at Styal proved to be a family affair as Paul Kirk led in with 34 from Hugh Kirk (32) and Richard Aldred (32).

Davenport’s men tested their skills in a Three-Club and Yellowball over 14 holes.

First in with 68 points were Brian Johnston, Paul Leach and Rod Igoe from Stefan Jakubowski, Gordon Smith and Ross Berry (65).
