Macclesfield Lions 34 Caldy 15

MACCLESFIELD Lions scored six tries as Caldy struggled to compete with the excellent Lions line-out and aggressive driving mauls.

Veteran number eight Paul Clark led the way with four tries.

The Lions chose to play into the wind and sun in the first half but took the game to Caldy from the start and opened the scoring after eight minutes, Andy McGeorge crossing the line after good forward pressure.

Caldy closed the gap with a penalty before the Lions scored their second try following a line-out catch and drive. Clark emerged from the pile to score.

The Lions scored the try of the game as the ball moved through the team to Clark, who had slotted in at centre.

Caldy scored a good try and the half ended 17-8.

With the advantage of the wind the Lions started the second half by kicking deep and using their superior line-out and driving skills.

This tactic resulted in tries after 55 and 60 minutes, both scored by Clark.

With skipper Ian Roberts adding a conversion, the Lions had the game won with the score 29-8.

At this stage the Lions changed tactics and decided to throw the ball around.

This resulted in a loss of control for the hosts and it was Caldy who scored next, capitalising on some poor tackling to score a converted try after 70 minutes.

With the final play of the game, the impressive Jack Taylor rounded off a good move to complete the scoring and give the Lions a 34-15 win.

There were good performances from debutants Rick Chadwick and Eddie Saunders but man-of-the-match was Clark who organised the driving mauls expertly.

Next week the Lions take on Macclesfield third team. Kick off is at Priory Park is at 1pm.
