MACCLESFIELD'S Vets’ victory over Rochdale means that they are the first winners of the Clapham Landscapes Northwest Vets League.

Having lost only one league game all season, the victory means that Macclesfield cannot now be caught with only one league game to go.

Although the rugby, in poor playing conditions, was not pretty, it was effective as Macclesfield took an early lead from a Keeling penalty.

The first try soon followed when good work by skipper Spendlove and the in-form Mair led to a try by Worthington.

This was followed by a second Worthington try after a clever pre-planned move from the line-out by Harper.

The second half saw further excellent performances from both backs and forwards including Hunter, Frain, Glover and Jones and more tries soon followed, firstly from a well worked move by King lead to Illott scoring a simple try, and an individual run leading to a try by Davies.

As Rochdale became stretched Fyfe scored the try of the game after a good effort by Robinson, Roberts and Wright which secured Macclesfield a bonus point.

A consolation try by Rochdale did little to dampen spirits and Macclesfield next play Stockport at home in their final league game.
